Always a classic
Danish art history is full of great and well-known classic works – funnily enough, there are probably more Danes who know the classics from the fast food chain McDonald’s, such as the Big Mac and McBacon. “Always a Classic” is a humorous project where McDonald’s meets the classic works of art and creates a new context by looking at the contrast between the two, as well as the similarities between what can be perceived as “classic”.
The painting “From an Roman Osteria” (1866) by Carl Bloch is blended with photographs of food from McDonald’s. The famous painting has a permanent place at the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen, and the edited McDonald’s version could be placed in the cityscape close to the museum.
With many great Danish works of art to choose from (and the many old favourites from the McDonald’s menu), I could easily see the project expanding. “Always a Classic” is a two-day project, and therefore limited in its scope, but I believe that the “double take” concept, where two large recognizable contrasts work together, can be further developed or used for other larger projects.
